About Johanna Drummond
Johanna has been sculpting since the early 70’s. Her work was known only to a select circle of private collectors until 1981 when it was displayed by the Zoological Society of Florida. Today her works are displayed in prestigious collections throughout the United States, Europe, South America and India. You can also find her sculptures in the personal collections of internationally famous sculptor Laszio Ispanky, as well as eleven pieces in the national corporate headquarters of Alamo-Rent-A-Car. More recently she has been collected by Sylvester Stallone, Burt Reynolds, and world-famous wildlife painter, Carl Brenders.
Johanna was selected as the first female featured sculptor in the largest international wildlife show in the world, held annually in Charleston, SC. Johanna has been displaying her work for over thirty years all over the state of Florida and has received numerous awards. She is presently represented by Endangered Arts gallery located in Hilton Head Island, SC.
Inspiration for Johanna’s first subjects came from her immediate surroundings, six and a half acres in Florida on a bird sanctuary. Johanna began to sculpt the mushrooms around the lake where she lived in as realistic a manner as possible. This new art form proved to be very successful as her mushrooms appeared in over 35 stores coast to coast. Soon she moved on to sculpting squirrels, rabbits and ultimately to her favorite subject, the endangered big cats.
Each of Johanna’s sculptures reveals the artist’s careful attention to realism. Intricate touches of undercutting in clay and paint to form a unique sculpture which cannot be duplicated. Because she feels molds restrict details, she insists on sculpting only originals.
The kiln fired clay sculptures marked with detail shaped by Johanna’s talent provides the warmth, texture and color needed to bring animals to life. Through her art Johanna hopes to bring recognition to all animals, especially the endangered species and the environmental challenges they face.
